Piano Concerto (2018)

When I started working on my Piano Concerto, I looked for chord agglomerations usually made up of several major chords. The image of calm mountain lakes, smooth as glass, suggested a slow movement to me, but one that contained disturbances intended to generate a certain tension despite the music’s contemplative nature. The subsequent fast passage also features major sonorities and dissonances. Following this is an extended accelerando lasting several minutes that leads to a passage in which time seems suspended, before being bent yet again, this time in the opposite direction – from about 250 to 12 beats per minute. At the same time, there is a procession from the quietest to the loudest sound, in which the sonic events, as if viewed under a microscope, reveal their maximum potential. Here as well, the music reaches a sort of “zero point” that is then followed by a brief coda in which the work’s opening material returns cast in a new light.
