Die Zeit und das Zimmer (Time and the Room) is a play by Botho Strauss in which, according to my interpretation, fragmentary images related to the main character, Marie Steuber, tell a story through inventive, non-linear means of the difficulties of interpersonal communication and ultimately failed relationships.
For his staging at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin (2001/2002), director Jarg Pataki asked me to compose stand-alone music for Debussy’s instrumentation of viola, flute, and harp that represents the style of my own music while uniting Debussy’s sensuousness and Webern’s precision. He was generous enough to invite me to stay at his farm near Geneva while he was away. Peacefully isolated there for three weeks in November, I read Stephen Hawking and Botho Strauss and composed miniatures, which feature variations of a tone row related to Debussy’s famous trio, for use as inter- ludes in the play.
I began most days by taking a walk and listening to music, starting my work as darkness fell and completing one miniature each night, accompanied by candlelight and wine. The resultant suite pro- vides a small selection of the theater music. In the stage production, the musicians played the pieces from memory, sometimes in total darkness.
